Clipping
Distortion caused when an audio signal exceeds the maximum level a system can handle.
Clipping is a form of distortion that occurs when an audio signal is pushed beyond the maximum level a system can represent, flattening the peaks of the waveform. It produces a harsh, distorted sound and is visible in a waveform as peaks cut off flat at the top and bottom. While sometimes used intentionally for effect (as in rock or metal), unwanted clipping degrades quality and is difficult to fully reverse.
