Jitter

Variation in the arrival timing of audio or data packets over a network, which can cause glitches.

Jitter is the variation in timing as audio or data packets travel over a network: packets sent at even intervals can arrive unevenly, causing glitches, gaps, or dropouts if not corrected. A jitter buffer compensates by briefly holding packets to smooth their timing. Jitter is a key concern in live streaming, VoIP, and any real-time networked audio.
