Grapheme

A grapheme is the smallest written unit of a language, a letter or group of letters, and is the written counterpart to a phoneme, the spoken sound unit. Mapping between graphemes and phonemes is central to speech recognition and text-to-speech, where systems convert between how words are written and how they are pronounced.
