Phoneme
The smallest unit of spoken sound that distinguishes one word from another.
A phoneme is the smallest unit of speech sound that can change the meaning of a word, for example the difference between the 'b' and 'p' in 'bat' and 'pat.' Phonemes are the spoken counterpart to graphemes, the written units, and are fundamental to speech recognition, text-to-speech, and pronunciation modeling.
