Feels Out Loud Clears 70 Episodes for Broadcast

Working with AudioShake

Becky McNattin, DSW, LICSW, owns Becoming Together Therapy and Wellness in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, and co-hosts the practice’s podcast, Feels Out Loud, with therapist Tara Martini. Since the first episode, which aired as a radio show, every show has opened and closed with licensed bumper music.

When Feels Out Loud moved to a new station, that music became a rights problem. The cues weren’t cleared for the move, and no session files existed. For example, in Episode 79 (previewed below), “Nurturing Self Esteem,” the music runs under the open, returns twice mid-conversation, and plays out the final minute — printed to the same mix as the hosts’ and guests’ voices. Re-recording the back catalog wasn’t realistic, so the alternative was leaving more than 70 episodes behind.

McNattin brought the archive to AudioShake, and AudioShake’s Music Removal stripped the bumper cues from every episode while leaving the conversation, the guests and the room untouched. All 70+ episodes moved to the new station with the show.

We had seventy-some episodes and a new station, and I was quietly preparing myself to lose all of it. What I didn't expect was hearing Tara and me sound exactly like ourselves with the music gone — no thinness, no artifacts, nothing chewed up. Those conversations belong to the people who trusted us with them. Getting to keep them mattered more to me than I can really explain.
