Bit rate is the amount of data used to represent audio per unit of time, usually measured in kilobits per second (kbps). Higher bit rates generally mean better fidelity and larger files; lossy formats like MP3 use lower bit rates by discarding some audio data. Bit rate is distinct from bit depth (the resolution of each individual sample) and from sample rate (how many samples per second).
