Frequency-Domain

A representation of audio by its frequency content rather than how it changes over time.

The frequency-domain represents audio in terms of the frequencies it contains, rather than as a moment-by-moment waveform. Converting a signal to the frequency-domain, via the Fourier Transform, reveals its spectral makeup, which is how many analysis and separation tools 'see' sound. It is the counterpart to the time-domain, and a spectrogram is a common frequency-domain representation.
