Stereo

Audio with two channels (left and right) that creates a sense of width and placement.

Stereo (stereophonic) audio uses two channels, left and right, to create a sense of width and the placement of sounds across the soundstage. It is the standard format for most music and consumer audio. Stereo sits between mono (one channel) and surround or immersive formats; converting stereo into those richer formats is the job of upmixing, which relies on separating the mix into individual elements.
