Channel

A channel is one independent path of audio within a file, signal chain, or speaker layout. Mono carries a single channel, stereo carries two (left and right), and 5.1 carries six, including the LFE. Channels describe where audio sits in a layout, not what that audio contains, which is why a six-channel surround mix can still hold dialogue, music, and effects locked together until they are separated.
